One individual already has! To wit:

… TROY, N.Y.–Edd Hifeng barely merits a second glance in “Second Life.” A steel-gray robot with lanky limbs and linebacker shoulders, he looks like a typical avatar in the popular virtual world.

But Edd is different.

His actions are animated not by a person at a keyboard but by a computer. Edd is a creation of artificial intelligence, or AI, researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, who endowed him with a limited ability to converse and reason. It turns out “Second Life” is more than a place where pixelated avatars chat, interact and fly about. It’s also a frontier in AI research because it’s a controllable environment where testing intelligent creations is easier.

“It’s a very inexpensive way to test out our technologies right now,” said Selmer Bringsjord, director of the Rensselaer Artificial Intelligence and Reasoning Laboratory ….MORE….

Second Life has obviously come of age! To wit:

…There are roughly one million active residents of Second Life. But for people who haven’t visited that virtual world — or don’t intend to — director Douglas Gayeton has brought back a dispatch.

Second Life is an online, 3-D landscape where denizens have an almost unlimited ability to enhance their appearance and abilities and develop property. At their keyboards, users create alter egos to delve into fantasy or forge new online relationships. Real-world companies have used the platform for marketing and setting up virtual stores and services. Second Life was developed by the San Francisco-based company Linden Lab.

Mr. Gayeton created a documentary about this culture by immersing himself in it for about eight months using a digital proxy — his paunchy look-alike avatar, Molotov Alva. (A Molotov cocktail plays a part in the film’s plot, and “Alva” came from Thomas Edison’s middle name.) He shot his documentary by using ….MORE…

This is ‘way ‘way cool, to wit:

….I saw Iron Man on Monday and it is a great movie! What I was unaware of was that Iron Man is also in Second Life and doing something pretty cool. Annie Ok worked on the machinima film (see above) and informed me of an Iron Man in Second Life Contest with the chance of winning $L 100,000 (or roughly $400 USD).

To enter you grab the Iron Man avatar, take pictures in Second Life, join the Iron Man in Second Life Flickr group and upload your pictures to Flickr. There isn’t much time left as the contest end this Friday, May 9th, at 10 AM PST (1pm EST). Black cube rain

Ever want to

see black cube rain?

It’s rather, ahem, odd?

To wit:

…Sunday’s attacks by DiSSENTiON knocked out many sims, often trapping residents in lagged sims, crashing neighborhoods and limiting teleports. But, in spot conversations with those affected, no one really got angry.

Annoyed, absolutely. But not raging. A few people, like one who’s rezzer started autoreturning everything, including legit tenants, was very upset. But many simply waited for the individual sims to reboot.

Many people were simply enjoying themselves or doing basic work. This reporter was caught in the first attack while on a Sunday drive to a party. I was essentially trapped in Columbia sim, the car effectively useless. But the scenery was impressive ….MORE….

Very odd indeed. Such an event is called ‘griefing’ done by ‘griefers‘ - people who apparently really need meaning in their lives.

This just came across my radar - to wit:

…Understanding how to promote yourself, an event, or just to get the word out in Second Life can be a bit of a challenge, even for the professionals have trouble doing it. There are some tools and resources that are lacking in from the traditional marketing world and Second Life is a mish mash of press and blogs who covers a wide assortment of the action all independent of one another. While there are many methods to reach residents (such as notecard/texture dropping, group notices, and mass IM’s), they are limited, as most of them rely on targeting individual people/avatars rather than a global space of news.

With the lack of traditional tools, there are new tools and services that can help promotion in Second Life, most of them dependent on blogs and RSS feeds ….MORE….

I love some of the resources that are listed, including the World of Second Life - that one syndicates the blogosphere.

before, and I’ll say it again - Second Life is going to make a profound impact on college learning in the future. Check this out:

Last quarter, Matthew Anthony, a Rochester Institute of Technology senior, came across the ultimate class based on his favorite pastime, Second Life, a virtual world launched in 2003 by Linden Research Inc. that’s part game, part marketplace and part social network.

“I was quite intrigued,” said the 21-year-old management information systems major.

RIT says its E. Philip Saunders College of Business has developed the first university-level marketing and advertising course for the virtual marketplace.

According to RIT professor Neil Hair, an increased number of people are ditching their real-world jobs for online positions within Second Life ….MORE….

Personally, I can’t wait to see what it will be like to earn an entire college degree without having to interact with the rest of humanity.
