…In the past few days, Comedy Central has taken a brazen approach to some of the issues we deal with day in and day out. The virtual world Second Life is one of those buzzwords often thrown around conferences by people trying to sound like they know what they’re talking about. Many well-known companies have spent lots of money jumping into Second Life to have a virtual world presence, but I think they were simply jumping the shark.

All in all, however, I think Jon Stewart’s commentary was a weeeee bit unjust (hysterically funny, mind you, but unjust). The more I’m researching about the academic applications of Second Life, the more impressed I am by what I’m discovering (such as Seton Hall’s English department, where the chairwoman, Mary Balkun, uses an island rented by Seton Hall on which she built a near-exact replica of the house in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel “The House of the Seven Gables,” written in 1861:
….“I set up spaces in the house,” she said. “We tried to divide up those spaces and I have the students set up these with objects they found that represented the period.” As her avatar walked and flew around the island – avatars in Second Life have the ability to fly and teleport from place to place – she showed more projects and presentations her students created. Ranging from cookbooks to self-made quizzes, the students’ creativity truly shone. …MORE…
