Your town in 3D - Second Life used to create virtual depiction of real life town
To wit:
A couple of weeks ago, I talked about a virtual reality world called Second Life. Now the publishers of this paper have launched their own 3-D experience with the hope that the community can view its news, information, and local businesses in a whole new way.
The vision is called Virtual Valley or “V2″ and it’s available now by going to either the San Leandro Times or Castro Valley Forum Web site and clicking on a link on the left side of the page. A new Web browser should pop up and ask first-time visitors to download a small 3-D file. Once loaded, the visitor is able to navigate through a park-like setting with green grass, bumpy knolls, shade trees, and even light poles. The three buildings that dominate the town represent the three main districts: A business storefront, a news and information stand, and a library pavilion which was modeled after the lobby of the new Castro Valley library.
The site launched quietly over the weekend but is not completely finished. The shelves of the library are sparse and the business storefront is not yet accessible. But there is still much to see and interact with ….MORE….
So it seems like Second Life is not only penetrating the academic market…but the very towns in which people live as well.
Interesting….
